Abstract

In 1987, Scholarly Resources, then a fairly new publisher, released acollection of essays, The Human Tradition in Latin America. TheTwentieth Century, edited by William H. Beezley and JudithEwell. The editors found their title in Two Cheers forDemocracy by E.M. Forster, in which he posited an aristocracy"of the sensitive, the considerate and the plucky" whorepresented "the true human tradition." They used thephrase to emphasize their focus on the stories of individuals whodemonstrated something unique, rather than those who might bementioned in a regular political history course.
