Resumo

During America's decisive "longnineteenth century" (1776 to 1914), race lost none of thesalience it had accreted over the previous three centuries. Just asnotions of physical, cultural and psychological difference coloredencounter and exploitation throughout the hemisphere, they prejudicedthe overthrow of slavery and colonialism and the making of nationsacross the New World.
