Abstract
This article analyzes the presence of football in the Bolivarian Games of 1938, held in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. The six nations that partici-pated in the event had in common the role of Simón Bolívar as a symbol of national liberation within their national identity discourse. These are: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. Basing ourselves on periodicals from the city of Bogotá and on the football competition that was part of this event, we analyze how the Games exacerbated issues related to nationalism and also the construction of an international image of the idea of a Colombian nation.
